Now a well-known landmark, the
original
structure was built as a gristmill in 1929 by Robert Lasater, an Executive
with the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
The gristmill was designed
to be charmingly English by noted Winston-Salem
architect Luther Lashmit and the property was once part of a 400 acre baronial estate.
The initial
millhouse along with a portion of its surrounding wall structure were part of a dam system
while the original
waterwheel provided power for the mill as well as being a pumping station for the
adjacent four hundred acre fire protection system. |
